Personalities:

Hugh Headley
Host / Reporter

RD_HughHugh has been a mainstay on Shaw TV as a host and reporter, since 2007. He paid his dues in Northern BC, working for one of the smallest TV stations in the country. He was thrilled to come to Shaw TV, and give viewers information while entertaining them at the same time. “Infotainment is what I do”. With past work experience in many different industries, including retail, the oil rigs, hospitality, fitness and more. And as a reporter, he does it all -- entertainment, sports or features. He’s the Swiss army knife of reporters. In addition to hosting the daily show, you can catch Hugh on the sports talk segment.

Tasha Chiu
Host/Reporter

RD_TashaA born and raised Vancouverite, Tasha moved to Central Alberta 3 years ago and has been working in television for the past 9 years. Back in 2002, she got her first big break in TV as the Whistler Reporter for City TV Vancouver. From her 15 minutes of fame, she went on to host The Express on Shaw TV in Vancouver, and in 2005 returned to City TV to be Breakfast Television’s on-location host for the next 3 years. As the live-eye host on BT, Tasha had the opportunity to interview celebrities, cook with the best chef’s, fly a plane and even repel off a 30 story building. Like most people in television, Tasha also moonlighted as community reporter for Canucks TV, and had an Oscar worthy performance as a “reporter” on straight to DVD White Noise 2. Since moving to Alberta, Tasha had the opportunity to be part of the morning show “Diesel and Chiu” on Kraze 101.3 before moving back to television.

Jim Claggett
Reporter

RD_ClaggettJim has been involved with the media in Red Deer for more than 20 years working in both radio and television, covering a wide range of topics including local politics, health issues, community, crime and sports. He’s been a Master of Ceremonies for a variety of community events and has even pushed his public speaking skills to the stage as a member of Central Alberta Theatre. Jim also writes for two different golf publications and has worked as a caddy on the Canadian Golf Tour for several years. He has also coached football in the community and was a hockey referee for more than a dozen years.

 Pat Smith
Senior Producer

RD_PatSmithA Central Albertan at birth, Patricia started as a volunteer producer with Shaw in 1983 and joined the staff two years later. Since then she’s worn every hat in the department, and returned to her first love, hands-on production, in 2006. She enjoys changes and challenges, and continues to find her work, co-workers and community contacts interesting and energizing. Originally a high school English teacher with a B.Ed. from the U of A, she also worked as an ACTRA rep, video editor, freelance writer and small business owner before finding her feet in community television. She thinks she’ll stay.

Chris Ballantyne
Supervising Producer

RD_BallantyneChris has worked in Broadcasting for nearly a decade; beginning his career in his hometown of Prince George, BC as the CKPG Fun-Chaser.  He held numerous positions at the station, learning everything it had to offer including shooting a Camera, Video Editing, Master Control Operation, Directing and Producing News Casts….Chris likes to say he did everything at CKPG except clean toilets. Chris has lived in Red Deer for nearly 5 years, spending the first couple months directing newscasts at another TV station, then making the move to SHAW, where he is now a producer. Since becoming a member of the SHAW Team, Chris has involved himself in all facets of the station, including commercial production, co-creating the Sports Talk segment (living out his dream of debating sports on TV), bringing the 2nd Pure Fighting Championships to SHAW VOD, and his greatest achievement to date: partnering with the Ponoka Stampede to produce daily rodeo broadcasts, which are available on Shaw Direct and most of the Shaw Network every summer over the July long weekend.  Chris is happily married to his beautiful wife Melissa, and is the proud father of two children; even though they’ve increased his bald spot over the last couple years. If you’d like to debate Chris on a sports topic or have an idea for the Sports Talk panel to discuss on air, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Melanie Timms
Editor

RD_MelanieMelanie grew up with a passion for movies. At a young age she had aspirations of being a journalist and documenting “real life.” Her voyeuristic nature led her to Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario where she majored in Film Studies, focusing particularly on documentaries. During her time in Ottawa she worked on projects such as a video for Ministry of Natural Resources Canada and volunteered at the Canadian Film Institute organizing film screenings and writing newsletters. In 2003 Melanie moved to Central Alberta, where she joined the Shaw TV team as an editor and has been cutting ever since. Some of her most memorable projects have been the extremely snowy 2006 Alberta Winter Games in Hinton/Jasper, editing the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame vignettes for new inductees, and stepping out of her role as editor and into the role of reporter to interview L. Gen. Romeo Dallaire when he was on his book tour.

 Lex Engel
Videographer

RD_EngelLex is a born and raised Central Albertan, and after a year living in the Netherlands, she returned to Canada to get her broadcasting diploma from SAIT.  She did a stint in Lloydminster as a production assistant, and was an assistant director at CHCA news before joining the SHAW TV Red Deer team in 2007. Lex loves what she does, and is hard pressed to pick a favourite part, but she loves live events, and is especially proud of directing Shaw’s coverage of the Ponoka stampede.  When she isn’t at work Lex can be found curled up with a good book, sewing, cooking, or hanging out with friends.  You may also find a “gone fishin” sign up at her desk come Friday at 5 in the summer, as she says “the only thing better than a day at the lake is a week!"
